Garry receives the Championship Trophy from County President, Jerry Gegg and (L-R, James Cooper, Ali James, President and Paul Matthews) with the Team Shield.
In a closely contested Championship at Cumberwell Park, Garry Slade (Bowood)emerged as Champion for the second time after two sub par rounds of 69 left him 1 shot clear of Ali James and Paul Matthews from the host club.
Only two shots separated the three players after the morning round with Garry on 69, Paul on 70 and Ali on 71 but as the afternoon progressed the chasers closed in. Both Ali and Paul got to 5 under par for their rounds after 13 but the closing holes proved decisive. Paul dropped three succesive shots on 14,15 and 16 and Ali dropped shots on 15 and 17 leaving Garry with a two shot advantage playing the last. His second overshot the green leaving a tricky pitch back down the hill but, needing two putts from 15 feet to win, he calmly rolled the ball close for a tap in 5 and victory by the single shot margin.
A memorable first Championship for Gert Coetzee (S Cerney) who finished fourth with rounds of 69-74, also for Myles Edwards who scored nett 66-71 off 5 handicap to win the nett prize.
The last time Garry won the Championship, in 2012, he went through the whole season undefeated in singles matches for Wiltshire which included South West week and the English County Finals...let's hope he does the same this year! Garry will also now go on to represent Wiltshire in the English Champion of Champions tournament at Woodhall Spa in September.
In the Team Shield to decide the Wiltshire Champion Club, the host side of Ali James, Paul Matthews and James Cooper were runa away winners with an aggregate score of 4 under par, 11 shots clear of the Bowood team of Garry, Luke Gorman and Jacques Hugo. Cumberwell's prize is a trip to Durham, to Brancepeth Castle GC to contest the English Champion Club tournament.
